I've been working on a series of portraits for portfolio development over the last couple of months that explore the relationship between two of my strongest interests: experimental portrait photography and doodle art. By combining these two elements, especially in self portraits like the one on the right, the photograph absorbs elements from the subconscious and starts to exude its own vibe. The subject is almost oblivious to the patterning around them, but at the same time that patterning is the world inside their head, the aura that almost subconsciously defines who they are.
The reason self-portraits have been most effective is because the doodles that I create around my own portraits truly represent my subconscious self. Sure the designs look beautiful on other models but in order for them to be accurate they would have to stem from their own subconscious. I know that if I had a visual sort of energy it would be expressed as my doodle drawings. However, I asked my dad recently what his visual aura would be and he said it would be expressed as music, not visual art. This is precisely why it wouldn't be accurate to project my own subconscious on portraits of others.
I have experimented with other subjects, colored pens, and color photographs but I am slowly fine tuning my concept through process of elimination and further experimentation.
